Health Systems: Country of the moment and why?
There has been very rapid change in technology and globalization, which has accelerated urbanization throughout the whole world, also changing patterns of disease. Healthcare systems have not changed as rapidly and have had a hard time coping with the change in pattern of diseases, and the ballooning healthcare costs. China has taken the need to address this gap very seriously in their stimulus package for 2009, allocating a significant sum towards addressing the country’s healthcare issues and adapting their healthcare systems to the change in Chinese patients' needs.
What should be our goal in International Health over the next 10 years?
Adaptation of healthcare systems to cater for chronic diseases, that include adequate systems (medical and societal) to ensure appropriate patient follow-up. This adaptation results in a more integrated approach to disease management, taking the focus away from vertical and disease specific programs. |
