Health Systems: Country of the moment and why?
Most emerging markets are moving at incredible speeds in term of economic growth, but they are lagging behind in terms of establishing and expanding adequate health care systems and millions of people do not have adequate access. This is especially true given the chronic disease burden now facing these countries. Their healthcare systems are not prepared or adapted to cope with treating cancer, diabetes or heart disease which are becoming the main disease burdens of these countries. With the increasing change in lifestyles in these countries – healthcare systems also need to change and adapt at the same rate.
What should be our goal in International Health over the next 10 years?
Cancer is a huge priority. We need to adapt our diagnostics, treatment options and knowledge of the disease for low- and middle-income countries that are now suffering from this disease more than HIV, Malaria and TB. Cancer is becoming epidemic.
